9 mistakes that you make while caring for your wrap
…and in consequence, shorten its life. Look what they are and how can you avoid them.
Washing and ironing your wrap too seldom
Fibers need refreshing – washing puts them back in order and prevents from shifting. Ironing your wrap, especially if it’s all-cotton, with linen or with hemp, helps avoid creases.
Folding your wrap always the same way
It can lead to permament creases (creases that don’t disappear after ironing). To avoid them, change the way of folding the wrap from time to time or roll it.
Storing your wrap in direct light
It can lead to fading of the color. To avoid fading, store your wrap in a shade.
Ignoring the “hand washing” label and washing your wrap with gentle fibers (silk, wool) in a washing machine
Even if you use a “gentle” program in your washing machine, it’s not the same as hand washing and may lead to felting of the wool or destroying gentle silk fibers. To be 100% sure – follow the label and wash your wrap according to instructions on it.
Washing your wrap as the only thing in the washing machine
Wash the wrap with some clothes/blankets/towels in similar colourway (check if there’re no zip fasteners or sharp elements on them). Do not wash the wrap separately because tumbling in the half-empty drum may weaken the fabric.
Using softeners while washing the wrap
Softeners make fabric slippery so avoid them while washing your wrap. There are better ways to break it in!
Steam ironing your wrap with silk or bamboo
Some fibers “like” steam ironing (like hemp, cotton or linen) but some (silk, bamboo) – don’t. Iron wraps with silk or bamboo on a gentle program (one dot) without steam.
Leaving your wrap with silk in direct sunlight
Silk is UV-sensitive so you should leave it in shade, especially when drying.
Trying to remove the stain on the wrap immediately with a universal stain remover
Of course, you should remove the stain as soon as possible because the longer it stays the harder it will be to remove. But – if you fail to remove the stain, every washing will conserve it so before you start removing the stain make sure what caused it. It’s always better to choose a stain remover dedicated to the certain stain and fabric instead of choosing the universal one. Check (on the less-visible part of the wrap) if the stain remover doesn’t cause fading of the color.
